Churches in Bywell Parish

St Peter's

Please visit our web site for all information about St Peter's Bywell, St John's Stocksfield, our sister parish of St George's Mickley, and also about the Church Hall.

We call our churches 'the hidden three in NE43' because they are all tucked away in beautiful rural settings. St Peter's is at the end of a quiet lane, on the banks of the Tyne, and is very near to another ancient church, St Andrew's which is no longer used for worship. Christians have worshipped at St Peter's since the 8th century and it is believed that a bishop was consecrated at Bywell in 802 AD, and that it was also the site of a monastery that had links with Monkwearmouth.

St Peter's is not only an ancient church in a lovely rural location, it is also a parish church which is home to a welcoming and friendly congregation and which is seeking to look to the future.  As a parish church of the  Church of England it seeks to be there for the whole community.

We offer a range of services, from the Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship, to more informal services at our monthly First @ 4 family service, which takes place at St John's. Morning and Evening Prayer are said in St  John's Monday to Thursday, with Tuesday morning being silent meditation.

We are a diverse congregation, including Christians, from a variety of traditions and people who wish to explore faith. We are passionate about proclaiming the good news of the Gospel and sharing God's love with everyone.

The church is open Thursday to Sunday between 10.00 and 16.00 (15.00 in winter) and everyone is welcome - to explore the church and it history, to find a place of peace and reflection in a busy world, or to be part of any of our services.

St John's is situated in Stocksfield, in Meadowfield Road. Our weekday services are held here, as well as some one-off services. Our joint services with St George's are held here too  as are our monthly First @ 4 Family service.

There is a modern Church Hall at St John's which hosts various groups - please see the website to see what is going on.
